Last week, in the interest of staying competitive, B2B SaaS Guru added the words "AI-powered" to the front of every feature in our product. This is a true changelog of what actually changed underneath each name. We're publishing it because someone has to, and because our own board deck currently implies the opposite of everything below.

"AI-Powered Search" (formerly: Search)

The search bar is unchanged. It still runs the same keyword match it ran in March. What changed is that when zero results come back, instead of a blank state, it now says "Our AI didn't find anything for that — try rephrasing!", which is a sentence generated by a template, not a model, but which reads exactly like the sentence a model would generate, which is the entire strategy.

"AI-Powered Insights" (formerly: A Chart)

The chart is the same chart. It shows the same numbers, on the same axes, in the same shade of blue we've used since the Series A. Above the chart, we added one line of text: "Insight: Activity increased this week." This sentence is produced by an if-statement that checks whether this week's number is higher than last week's number. We are aware that this is not intelligence. We are counting on the fact that "insight" and "if-statement" both start with a vowel sound and neither word means anything to a buyer mid-demo.

"AI-Powered Onboarding" (formerly: A Checklist)

Still a checklist. Still five items. Still "Invite your team," "Connect your calendar," "Set a goal." We renamed the progress bar "Your AI Setup Journey." The AI has not been consulted about your setup, your journey, or the relationship between the two. It is a progress bar. It was always a progress bar. It remains, definitionally and forever, a progress bar.

"AI-Powered Support" (formerly: A FAQ Page)

We took our existing FAQ page, kept the exact same forty questions and forty answers, and put a chat bubble in the corner that says "Ask our AI." Typing a question into that bubble returns the FAQ answer that best keyword-matches your question, formatted with a small typing animation to imply thought. The thinking dots are the only genuinely new engineering work in this entire changelog, and they took one afternoon.

"AI-Powered Reporting" (formerly: An Export Button)

You can still export a CSV. Above the export button, we added a sentence: "Powered by our proprietary AI reporting engine." There is no reporting engine. There is a button. There has only ever been a button. "Proprietary" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, given that what it's protecting is a button that calls a database and writes rows to a file, a technique that has been proprietary to nobody since approximately 1998.

What we're not saying

We are not saying AI is fake, or that nobody's shipping real models under real features — plenty of teams are doing genuinely hard, genuinely useful work with genuinely trained systems, and we salute them from a safe distance. We are saying that somewhere between "real model" and "our roadmap," a large number of companies discovered that the two words "AI-powered," placed in front of literally any noun, function as a small, effective tax cut on the burden of proof. Nobody asks a button to defend itself. Everybody asks an AI-powered button to defend itself slightly less, provided you say it with confidence and a small sparkle icon.

Our recommendation

If a feature would be embarrassing to describe honestly — "a progress bar," "a button," "an if-statement" — that's useful information about the feature, not a marketing problem to be solved with a modifier. Fix the feature, or don't, but don't launder the gap with a prefix that costs nothing and promises everything.

If your product's last four release notes all start with the words "AI-powered" and you're not entirely sure what's underneath your own sparkle icons anymore, email us at contact@b2bsaas.guru. We'll audit your changelog. We already know what we'll find, because we just found it in ours.
